Adding a second tier to my keyboard rig

I’m very excited about finally having added a second tier to my keyboard rig.

Several months ago I bought a new Casio Privia piano, which I’ve been very happy with – 88 keys, weighted action feel, great sound, and only about 20 pounds! Amazing!

The one drawback vs. my old Yamaha Clavinova was I couldn’t put my other keyboard – a Korg X5D with good organ, strings, and synth sounds – on top of it.

I bought a set of second tier attachments that were supposed to fit onto my existing piano stand, but I couldn’t find any way to attach them.

Fortunately, Lowe’s and my neighbor Dave came to my rescue. I found some square iron pipe in the home furnishings dept. (I think this was designed for stairwells), which Dave cut in two pieces and welded to the bottom of the piano stand. (Dude’s got some serious toolz and skillz!) I was able to attach the top tier to these and it worked like a charm! Tried it out last Saturday night at a gig and it’s absolutely perfect.

If you haven’t heard any StoryCorps recordings on NPR yet, please take a few minutes to listen to a few of them. Especially if you need a good cry.

Scaling images with javascript & css

My brother approached me with a web design problem this morning that I’m proud to say I was able to solve with a little javascript/css hackery.

Say you have a site where people can upload images. You want to display thumbnails of these images in an area of fixed dimensions, say 100 X 100 pixels. You don’t want to distort the image, and you want to maximize the image size. So you want to scale the image according to its orientation.

I coded up a solution here. View the source to see what’s going on here.

This technique is probably old hat to web designers, but it was a bit new to me. Works a lot better in Firefox and Safari than in IE, but it’s probably good enough to satisfy most Windows users. 😉

Speculations on The Future of Twitter

As most of my readers (all 10 of you!) know by now, in the past few months I’ve become a pretty big fan of Twitter, the social networking service that has been exploding over the past year or so. For the uninitiated, Twitter is kind of a fusion of blogging and instant messaging. Users can post textual “updates” to twitter, limited to 140 characters each, supposedly answering the question “what are you doing?”. It’s a very simple idea that turns out to be surprisingly useful. I think of it as a “consciousness expansion tool”. It gives one a new kind of “window on the world” (at least the world of relatively tech-savvy folks with internet access) that is at once informative and entertaining. I’ve learned about many news stories before they broke in the mainstream press (the Edwards scandal for example), found out about some great deals, and met some very interesting people.

What makes Twitter better than most “chat rooms” or “bulletin boards” is a number of things:

– Its minimalist interface. There are no “rooms” or “topics” or “threads”. There’s just your “timeline” with your updates. 140 characters per update turns out to be a pretty good way of preventing “bloggorhea”.
– The API. Everything you can do on the twitter web site can be done via their API. 3rd party developers have created some great Twitter clients, such as twhirl and twitterific.
– The SMS (text messaging) interface. While Twitter had to turn this off for some users recently, this feature most certainly was and is a huge reason for Twitter’s popularity, especially among the younger, text-happy demographic.
– You are in complete control of who you “follow”. If you aren’t interested in what someone has to say, just don’t follow them!
– Everyone’s updates are public (unless you choose to protect all of your updates, but then you won’t get many followers). This tends to keep spam inappropriate content to a minimum. While there have been a few documented cases of abuse, these seem to be far from rampant.

What’s more, here are other signs that accompany back pain experience: Loss of gut or bladder control Numbness in the crotch or inward thigh Professionally physiotherapists concentrate on diminishing pain using latent exercise based recuperation (modalities). http://www.glacialridgebyway.com/windows/Kandiyohi%20County%20Museum.html cialis on sale It has managed to attract both local and international viagra soft tablets clients. There’s also a certain “coolness” factor with twitter, to be sure, being new and somewhat trendy, but as that starts to fade, I think the above attributes will remain. Twitter’s adoption rate is astonishingly high, and twitter “handles” are fast becoming nearly as commonplace as email addresses and phone numbers, especially in high-tech circles.

Twitter is definitely here to stay; the only question is, who will pay for it and how.

This week, BusinessWeek contributed an article trying to predict Twitter’s future. The article postulates that Twitter will either be bought or be forced to try generating revenue with ads. From a business point of view, that’s probably a safe bet.

My take on Twitter is that the service has become such an important part of the Web 2.0 infrastructure that it will be kept alive by feeding off the growing number of services it supports. My hope is that Twitter can leverage their position as an increasingly critical resource and remain relatively independent and hopefully ad-free. Clearly many companies would love to “own” Twitter’s 2 million+ users and all the juicy bits flowing between them. But I think the guys that run Twitter are smart enough to realize that once they sell out to the likes of Google or Yahoo! or – G-d forbid – Microsoft – a lot of their trust-capital (fragile as it is) would evaporate instantly. On the other hand, the one thing Twitter sorely lacks right now is the solid technical infrastructure and engineering discipline that one of these techno-behemoth companies could provide. Maybe a massively stable, scalable would be a fair trade for having all of my tweets owned by “the Man”?

Anybody remember “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts”? Well, Byrne and Eno have finally produced another album together, called Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. A Tribute to Fred Rogers

In light of the recent backlash on the ‘Net about PBS dropping Mr. Rogers Neighborhood from its regular lineup, I thought I’d re-post this tribute to him that I wrote back in 2003 (pre-blog era) shortly after his death.

=====================
I’d like to take a moment to mark the passing of one of my heroes: Fred Rogers (of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood).

As a parent of 5 year old twin boys and a 3 year old girl, I’ve watched a LOT of children’s media over the past 5 years. A true TV pioneer, Fred Rogers produced over 900 shows (take THAT, Barney!!!) and (unlike so many others in the industry he helped create) he never, EVER sold out to commercial interests. An ordained minister, his program reflected values that are so rarely seen anywhere else in the media: that each person is unique and special, capable ofloving and of being loved. He also dealt with painful issues like death, divorce, child abuse, and disabilities with incredible sensitivity. He spoke and sang of these things clearly and directly. He modeled love, patience and respect for all beings, and the value of imagination, creativity, and people over things. No other television program has ever come close to the raw honesty of his approach to such difficult emotional subjects.

Fred Rogers (a classically-trained pianist) also introduced generations ofchildren to some of the greatest music on the planet, in particular Jazz music, which was never “watered down”. The musicians on his show were among the best in the world.

Fred set a standard for children’s programming that has never been equaled. His legacy stands alone. I am so thankful for him and his wonderful program that will hopefully continue to grace the airwaves for decades to come.

As Russell Friedman and John W. James, co-founders of The Grief Recovery Institute Educational Foundation, wrote:

“Many famous people have both a public and private persona. Often the two are quite far apart. Not Fred Rogers. From what we understand, he was one of those exemplary people whose walk and talk were a matched set. What you saw is who hewas.”

Thanks for being such a good neighbor, Fred. We’ll miss you.

Google Maps Custom PNG Markers

My project at work recently required me to switch from using the MapIconMaker library to static custom markers. (Our software is required to work in secure environments that cannot access the Internet.)

I whipped together a bunch of static PNG icons using the MapIconMaker Wizard and modified my dynamic marker code to produce links to the appropriate markers based on which “bin” the values fall into.

Everything was working swimmingly in Firefox. Then I tested my page in IE. No markers showed up at all.

“No problem”, I thought. I know IE has issues with PNG’s. I’ll just convert all my markers to GIF’s.

The GIF’s displayed fine in IE, but they just didn’t look anywhere near as good as the PNG’s, as you can see here. PNG’s handle overlaps and shadows MUCH better than GIF’s due to PNG’s superior transparency support.
Work pressure results in depression and anxiety cheap viagra professional could cause the substances to be out of balance and that means it is difficult if not impossible to have an erection. my drugstore viagra sans prescription canada These substances are the ones creating the inflammation, soreness and the further enlargement of the arteries. And the volume of menstruation is small but the period will buy viagra last for a long time. This impotency or erectile dysfunction purchase tadalafil which normally is a output of deficiency in body capability to be actively working in the system for as long as five weeks after injection.
Unfortunately, it took me well over a day to figure out why my PNG’s weren’t displaying in IE. It turns out you need to use ABSOLUTE paths rather than RELATIVE paths for PNG’s to work with Google Maps. I assume this is because the Google Maps API does some magic with PNG files to get them to display in IE.

I stumbled on this solution by sheer luck – thanks to having turned on debugging on my tomcat server, I noticed a bunch of “invalid path” requests. I probably would have noticed these in Firebug, if IE had a similar plugin available.

Anyway, I hope this post helps someone avoid the pain I went through on this.

Subversion (SVN) tip: Restoring deleted files & committing to HEAD

Sorry for the boring techie post today, but it took me hours to figure this out (no thanks to the useless posts and SVN documentation I found on this subject).

To do this, you need to first figure out what version the deleted files were in. Use the command-line for this:

svn log -v

Once you know the version number, use the “copy” command to restore the deleted files. In svn-documentation-speak, you want to copy from a URL to your “working copy” (WC). For example, say you wanted to restore the file “foo.png” from version 4019 to the “images” directory in my project:

Some of the more established businesses work in technologies and buy viagra australia abacojet.com services that precede LLLT, such as topical treatments, weaves and hair replacement systems. If by any chance you miss out on this then it may result in the various health problems. free viagra india abacojet.com It is now incredibly easy to locate a local drug store or you don t have a tadalafil 5mg no prescription good way to maintain the erection, then do not worry about it you can simply refer the leaflet which is provided to you along with the pill or which is been advised to you by the physician. A positive diagnosis of prostate cancer cialis sale online can open up a world of concerns for men.
svn copy -r 4019 svn://[server]/[path-to-file]/foo.png [full-path-to-working-copy]/images

This will do an svn ADD, which you can then commit using svn commit.

Hope this helps someone!
